Welcome to the exciting world of E-Textiles. We have selected a number of products for our range to make it easy for you to learn how to combine sewing with LED circuits.
LED Wristband

This wristband is a great starter project to introduce e-textiles into the classroom. Your students will be able to create their own piece of wearable technology in the form of a wristband which will light up with LEDs when the press studs are snapped shut.

Etextiles Project
1. Begin by cutting a piece of fabric which is long enough to wrap around the student’s wrist, wrapping end over end by about 2cm. If the fabric needs to be hemmed, make sure you cut enough extra fabric for this and hem the wristband before continuing.
2.
If you wish to add any decoration or detail, use a sewing machine to decorate the fabric at this stage. We used some metallic thread and sewed in silver and green for a high-tech look. Etextiles
3.
Use some ordinary sewing thread to sew the press studs in position at each end of the wristband, sewing through the outer three holes of each stud. Etextiles
4.
On the wrong side of the fabric, position the battery holder near one end of the wristband. Using ordinary sewing thread, attach the battery holder to the reverse side of the fabric, sewing through the stitching points (the stitching points do not have a silver ring around the edge of the hole). If your battery holder does not have stitching points, then secure one of the positive and one of the negative connection points, leaving the others free. Etextiles
5.
Using conductive thread, stitch one of the connection points (with a silver ring around the hole) to the fabric, then sew a continuous, running stitch from the connection point to the press stud.  Tie off the conductive thread and repeat the process, creating a connection from the other connection point to the adjacent press stud. 6. Take note of which press stud will carry the positive and which will carry the negative charge. If your LED is the wrong way round, it will not light up.
7.
On the right side of the fabric, position a sewable LED near to the press studs at the other end of the wristband, allowing space for the wristband to wrap over if necessary. Use conductive thread to join the LED to the front of the fabric, and then use a continuous running stitch to join the positive side of the LED to the positive press stud, and the negative side of the LED to the negative press stud. 8. Position the next sewable LED further down the wrist band, and use conductive thread to join the LED to the fabric, using a continuous running stitch to join the positive side of the LED with the positive side of the first LED. Repeat to add the third LED to the wristband.

9. Once you have finished sewing your wristband, you are ready to add the battery and try it on. Once both press studs have been closed, the LEDs will light up!
